Flor Bromley

Flor Bromley is a recording artist, bilingual singer/songwriter, actress, storyteller and puppeteer. Her new Children's Album, Adventure Day and its Spanish equivalent Aventuras, takes you on a journey through a wonderful day of play from the perspective of a child. It really is an Adventure Day from start to finish! With a wide variety of styles and stories, Flor does an incredible job of seeing the world through they eyes of little ones. The album is a fun and relatable collection of songs full of happy vibes. There are calm ​beats to take you through a 'Nature Walk', dance tunes to carry you through 'Playtime', and a hint of rock to help protest the mid-day nap in 'No Nap Today'. Your new album, Aventuras, has just been nominated for a Latin GRAMMY® as Best Latin Children's Music Album! Congratulations! This is a huge accomplishment! Can you tell us a bit about the album and what inspired it?

"Aventuras" is a fun album in Spanish that was born from the need to create an album for children from their own perspective. An album that talks about them for them, their routines, and the things they do every day. Routines that seem ordinary but are transcendent and part of their world: the magical world of childhood. It was inspired by my 4 year old and our daily adventures/routines. Both of my kids participate in the album. It has a mix of musical genres ranging from Dominican merengue, ska, country, Latin folk, cinematic pop, and alternative rock. It has wonderful collaborations with children's musicians Red Yarn and Uncle Jumbo. Produced by GRAMMY® winners Lucy Kalantari and Dean Jones.  I have had the honor to be nominated for a Latin GRAMMY® this season and I am so excited about it. "Aventuras" has its equivalent in English “Adventure Day”, which is the same album in a different language, and both are streaming everywhere. 

As a busy performer with multiple shows lined up each week, how do you keep things fresh and interesting? 

Every show is different because every audience is different. I take what they give me, their energy, their age, their life experience based on location, etc. I take that and put it into the show. So shows definitely have a set list and a structure but that could vary depending on the audience at that moment.

You have a very extensive background in Theatre Arts and Performance. How does your background influence your live shows?

In theatre school I was taught to have a "toolbox" of action verbs to use during performances to switch up the intention of the objective depending on the circumstances. So, while my objective is the same, the intention changes based on the audience I have. Also, I was taught the "drama mountain" which is the arc of the performance. I feel this comes in handy when planning a set list. I use storytelling a lot and sometimes puppetry to engage audiences. And lastly I use my musical theatre training to perform some songs like a musical monologue. This comes from my latest album particularly since songs are told from the first person perspective.

What is your favorite song off of the new album and why? 

Oh, this is a hard question. It varies all the time. Right now I am into "Nature Walk" because when performing I make it a game to portray the different nature elements with the kids and it is super fun even though it is a "slow" song. But the song I like to sing because it has these dramatic long belty vowels is "Dreamland” which is really magical for kids as well. But of course if I am in the mood for dancing I go with "Bubble Bath" and the party turns into a bubble dance party. I sing this one in almost all of my shows now.


You have a super fun radio show called Tunes, Tales, and More. How did you begin this journey and how do you balance the show, your performances, along with writing and recording?

Unfortunately the show is not running anymore. I started during the pandemic since everything was remote. I was able to record after bedtime and it was so great to get to listen to new music every week. As life went back to normal after the pandemic my life went crazy again and I had no time to continue to do it. I'd love to resume having a radio show again as part of my work since I loved doing it so much. I’d love to find the space for it.

What is the weirdest or craziest venue you've ever performed at?

More than the venue it was the experience the venue entitled us with. We were once (the band and I) hired to perform at a camp upstate New York around 6pm on a weekday. I thought it was an end-of-camp show with families as I often perform those types of shows, but as we got to the venue we realized it was a sleep away camp and the kids were more like teenagers. It ended up being one of the best shows ever because it literally turned into a party/dance competition, a very thoughtful and rewarding show. But the initial shock was crazy!
