I had the privilege of chatting with Kymberly recently about her new music, where her ideas come from, and her career highlight so far. 

What made you want to become a children's musician?

I’ve been privileged to work with children for most of my life. I love teaching children and interacting with them daily, and I really connect with them. As an educator, I believe it’s important to teach children about the world they live in and help them understand about different cultures, belief systems, and experiences. Music is a great tool with which to do this. 

Your new album, Everybody Needs a Little Sunshine, is a masterful collection of positive and happy childhood anthems from start to finish. Where do you get the ideas for your songs?

Thank you so much! I get my ideas from so many different places. The world is full of fun, zany, wonderful things. Sometimes I’ll be having a conversation with one of my four-year-old students and they will share something that will stick with me and the next thing you know, I’m hearing their words in a melody in my head! 

Raising my own kids and interacting with the kids that I teach daily give me a glimpse into their world and all the things that they are into, like, dinosaurs, unicorns, learning to tie their shoes, they’re favorite food…I can go on and on. Sharing these experiences and looking back on my own childhood experiences provide me with an endless surplus of ideas and subjects for songs.

You have been working in the music industry for quite some time now. What is your greatest highlight from your career so far and what are you looking forward to the most as you continue to create and perform?

My greatest highlight from my career thus far has been traveling to New York to perform at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum and Fort Green Park Conservancy’s Music at the Grove Summer Concert series. I stayed with my good friend, Suzi Shelton, who is also an amazing children’s artist. She showed me a great time and took me to all these great spots in Brooklyn, including Prospect Park and she was just. It was great performing my music for the children and families there and interacting with them, and seeing how they responded so openly to me.

I’m looking forward to working with organizations that work to build the children and family community, and doing more shows to promote my album.

Are there any musicians in our genre that inspire you? 

​Some musicians in our genre who inspire me are Claudia Robin Gunn, Alex, a.k.a. Lady B of Lavender Blues Music, Devin Walker, Amelia Robinson, Aaron and Rachel Bertram of Kids Imagine Nation, the Alphabet Rockers, and Greg and Steve. So many it’s hard to narrow them down!

In your opinion, what's the hardest part about releasing a new album that was made for children and their families?

For me, the hardest part about releasing an album for children and families is acquiring PR that is necessary for getting my music on platforms and sources that are portals to bigger audiences. Having to do all of the leg work has been hard but, you know, at the end of the day, it’s been worth it and very rewarding. And I am seeing the fruits of my labor. I feel so blessed to wake up every day and do what I love.

​What is the funniest thing a young fan has ever said to you?

Funniest thing a fan has ever said to me: A fan once told me that I reminded them of the sassy character, Helen, from the Nickelodeon kids tv show, “Drake and Josh”. The funny thing about that is that my kids used to tell me the same thing. LOL
